Scalextric takes me back to my childhood — long days building tracks and playing with my older brother (and almost always losing). That’s why I was so excited to be commissioned to design the digital adaptation of these toys. The project went through many changes due to several technical constraints, but the essence was to design an app for mobile and tablet devices where users could manage and customize players, the race, and view real-time positions and final results.
I started by creating wireframes to establish the idea with the client. A simpler first phase was chosen, since it depended on the hardware development.
I designed different versions to define the visual style the client wanted. After testing several, they opted for a more minimalist design aligned with their current brand.
First, turn on the Track Connect and the Bluetooth on your mobile device.
Then, place a car on the track.
Finally, pair the controller and customize the player.
As a childhood user myself, it wasn’t hard to empathize with today’s users — though with all the differences in how the toy now works and how its (not-so-young) target audience interacts.
We needed to stand out from competitors — whose designs are generally very dark — and create a cleaner, more minimalist interface. We used mostly generic iconography since the client had no specific assets.
I also contributed to designing interactions — from screen transitions to the general behavior of all user actions.
